Sonnet Nocturne Premiere
Eight months ago, the Film Department Class in the Upper School set out to create a unique series of short films, connected poetically, narratively, and musically, to embrace the new challenges of how we can express the creative spark during these times.
Sonnet Nocturne is an original, narrative exploration of the poetic sonnet and musical nocturne as a dramatic form through the lens of film. The narrative draws from the poetry of ten writers, including William Shakespeare, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Pablo Neruda, Charlotte Turner Smith, and Claude McKay, among others. Music will also share the spotlight, from the historic nocturnes of John Field, Frederic Chopin, Erik Satie, and Francois Poulenc to Ennio Morricone, Louis Vierne, Benjamin Britten – and an exciting new student composer at the school, Myles Kaplan.
The production features the work of Film Department students Kayla C, Giuseppe G, Jolie H, and Gianluca L, as well as other upper school students, family members and faculty.
Sonnet Nocturne is the result of eight months of exploration, creativity, newly discovered vistas, and a lot of dedication. We set out to show how art can flourish and thrive not despite the conditions we find ourselves in, but within the world in which we live. We hope you enjoy the journey!
